The "Happy Car"
The MGA was introduced in 1955 as “The first of a new line” following on from the successful pre-war designs of the MG T-series cars. The model retained a separate body and chassis, but gained the new “B Series” engine, which would later also be used to power the MGB. In 1955, this gave the MGA the capability of a 100mph top speed.
Perhaps the best thing about the MGA is that it is a true sports car, providing very hands on motoring, with absolutely no “mod-cons” to distract.
There is debate about whether the lack of door handles was due to aerodynamic efficiency claimed at the time or that they were just cheaper to build. There is no doubt though about the resultant classic lines of the MGA, it truly is a pretty car.
MGA’s raced at the ill fated 1955 Le Mans, although in prototype form which was effectively an unofficial launch of the car. The highest placed MGA finished 11th, which was a creditable result.
Over 100,000 MGA’s were produced as MG’s most successful car prior to the MGB. Significant variations included the 1500, 1600, Coupe, 1600 Deluxe, MKII and the Twin Cam. As for the MGB, part of the longevity of the MGA is that variations from the original theme were few.
Aspiration’s MGA is treasured, as it is the owners first classic car. If you can imagine driving a 900Kg go-cart, you will have some appreciation of driving the MGA. Aspiration’s car has some modifications from original. It has an 1800 B series engine fitted from an early MGB which gives it a little more power for modern traffic. Other than this change, it is an original 1957 1500 car.
From when the owner first bought the MGA it has always been referred to as the “happy car”. Drive in it and you’ll understand why.
